This cool season crop is adapted to low-lying moist areas. It will tolerate soils that are completely waterlogged and withstands up to six weeks of spring flooding. It is well suited to acidic organic soils, and thrives on Gray Luvisol soils and heavy, moist alkaline soils. It is intolerant of drought, salinity, and high temperatures. Of our legumes, it is the most tolerant of cold, and frost heaving.
